Sing for LIFE!

August 7th, 2010 by Deb Saville

Make A Difference-Sing!The project at Southern Cross Care is now in Week 8.  Everyone participating is enjoying the mixture of learning, fun, story telling, relaxation, singing, dancing and socialising with new friends.

Some of the stories collected will appear in the Make A Difference-Sing! book, which is a current ‘work in progress’.

The participants with dementia are surprising us all each week as they retain new songs in their short term memory.  The support workers are surprising us by coming further out of their comfort zone each week, learning the words to the old war time songs and doing whatever it takes to make sure their clients have a good time.  The volunteers continue to assist in a multitude of ways and sing and dance through the morning sessions.

Other reported benefits, for clients and support workers alike, include; reduced stress, increased friendships, a sense of purpose and increased well-being and happiness.    ”I am always happy when I come here…I feel special and valued…I am not so alone”, are some of the positive comments made by participants.

The group has chosen their name – Sing for Life and there will be an ‘open session’ for familiy, friends and invited guests on 21 Aug at Folley Village in Hilton.

It is a pleasure to be able to bring such pleasure to the group…Molly's Joy

and so rewarding to see the joy on everyone’s faces!   Heart-felt thanks to all involved.

Make A Difference~Sing!

April 27th, 2010 by Deb Saville

Singing is FUN!Do you sing?  Have you told yourself…or has anyone ever said that you can’t sing? Well, at our choir Born To Sing our philosophy is, “If you can speak, you can sing!”

We started in 2007 and after only 7 rehearsals 120 of us, many who had never sung before and couldn’t read music, sang to a packed Forrest Place at Christmas.  Since then we have performed many times and raised money for worthy causes, including Bush Fire Survivors.

Deb Saville is collecting stories, poems and songs from anyone who wants to contribute to the Make A Difference ~Sing! Book.  To be involved see the  Make A Difference-SING!-Guidelines and MAD-Consent Form

Part proceeds from this book will also go to a worthy cause!

New Charlie & Moon Website

December 18th, 2009 by Deb Saville

The Adventures of Charlie & Moon website www.charlieandmoon.com is up and running.  Still in its early stages, it aims tobecome a meeting place for children where they can LEARN, SHARE and ACT upon issues related to animal protection. The website will also interact with social networks, solicit kids’ artwork on the issue, and gather and distribute knowledge about initiatives run by kids around the world.

The Adventures of Charlie & Moon takes children on a wild ride through the imaginary Shire of Tumblegum, across The Plains of Desire to the dark City of the Quincequonces to prevent the evil toymaker, Skunk Weavel, from achieving his wicked ways.

The story follows Charlie Ramsbottom who, on the night before his ninth birthday, is summoned by the King of the Eagles to rescue his clan of eagles and other endangered species from being turned into stuffed toys by Skunk Weavel (an evil toymaker) in the City of the Quincequonces.

R E V I EW:
The Adventures of Charlie & Moon is charming! I can’t wait to have it in the store to hand sell it. It will appeal to a wide range of children but should be especially welcome to younger fans of the Harry Potter books. It has the classic feel and lovely language of Tolkien but with plenty of contemporary bits. I particularly liked the wonderfully flowery descriptions of people and places. The ‘English-ness’ might have turned off some readers before Harry Potter but now even the youngest kids know what ‘cream buns’ and ‘waistcoats’ are. I also love that the violence is kept low key & somewhat cartoon-y.
